Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which magnification is right for me?
You will have to try various degrees of magnification to find out which is best suited to you, your sight and the work you do.

If you are using magnification all day long, we recommend 2 to 3 times magnification, as these levels of magnification give you an optimal depth of field (i.e. freedom to move back and forth with your subject in focus). This helps you to maintain a relaxed posture through the day. Field of view is also widest at these magnifications.

Higher magnifications are best suited to specialist work, usually for a few hours at a time. Many of our customers have a 2.3 loupe for general work, and use them in combination with a 3.5 or 4.2 for intricate procedures.

  • I can see perfectly well. Why do I need loupes?
If you can't see it, you can't treat it! Magnification allows you to see the small details better. You will be able to work with a greater degree of precision, making diagnosis and treatment safer, more reliable and faster. Your ergonomic position is also improved when you use magnification – you don’t have to lean in close, bending your back and neck to see the details.
  • Will my eyesight be weakened by using magnification at work?
No. Your eyes will still get plenty of healthy exercise, but they won't be strained.
  • I am really short-sighted. Which loupes should I buy?
Whichever style of ExamVision loupe you choose, we can fit your prescription into the loupe and into the outer lenses, so you can see both your work area and for example your computer screen in perfect focus. Your loupes will be custom made – they will be perfect for you.
  • Which is better, flip-up or TTL?
This is a question of personal preference. ExamVision believes that the best possible optical performance is achieved by bringing the loupe as close as possible to the eye, which means we would always recommend our TTL.

However, some of our customers prefer the flexibility of flipping the loupe out of the way when the close work is finished. For these customers we have engineered a flip-up which comes as close as possible to the TTL experience. You will have to try them and see!

Perhaps you are considering upgrading from your existing flip-up to a TTL? Ask yourself how often you actually flip the loupe out of the way during a day's work. If you don't currently use your flip-up function, then we would recommend the ExamVision HD TTL as your perfect upgrade.

  • Do all loupes use the same standard for measuring degree of magnification?
No. It depends on the manufacturer and the loupe system. Unfortunately there is no generally accepted standard, so a 2.3 magnification in one brand may feel the same as a 2.5x magnification in another brand. ExamVision always measure the ‘angular magnification’ at a working distance of 40cm. Magnification is a good starting point, but you need to test a pair of loupes and consider the whole package before you make your purchase: clarity, comfort, width and depth of field.
  • Why are your loupes so expensive?
ExamVision loupes and lights are designed and produced without compromise in Denmark. Each pair is custom-made to suit the customer's eyesight and working practices. We use only the highest quality materials, and features like Hi-Index glass come as standard. Our dealers in different countries are all individually trained in fitting ExamVision loupes, and many have opticians on the team to ensure a perfect service. This is why our loupes may cost a little more than the competition – but when you first try ExamVision you will see clearly that they are the best!
  • If my eyesight changes, how do I change my loupes?
We offer to correct your loupes – both telescopes and prescription lenses – to suit your new prescription. It takes just a few working days. Your loupes will get a service at the same time!
  • I live in an area not covered by your distributors. Can I still buy your loupes?
Drop us a line at office@exam-vision.com, and we should be able to help.
  • What is the difference between HD and Lite?
Our HD loupes are our premium product, constructed with a complex multi lens system unique and unsurpassed in loupe design. We have also designed a Lite telescope, which is a lighter, more affordable model. It has marginally more colour separation, but is still an excellent high quality loupe for general applications.
  • I have been told I need to sit up straighter to avoid neck and back strain. How do loupes help me do that?
Because you see a magnified image, you don't need to lean into your subject (your patient for example). This allows you to sit up straighter for long periods at work, relieving strain on the muscles in your back and neck. ExamVision loupes also have an excellent depth of field (circa 20cm), so you can move back and forth while keeping your subject in focus, which also helps to avoid stiffness.

If you experience back and/or neck stiffness or pain at work, then it may be advisable for you to use our Prisma Lens System TM built into your loupes. The prism refracts the image, so you can sit up even straighter. Please discuss this in more detail with your local ExamVision dealer.
